2022 Toyota Land Cruiser Redesign – Rumors claiming that the next generation giant Toyota Land Cruiser will surf the industry downsizing the wave are getting louder. The off-roader gets a high-tech makeover, but it stays as robust as ever.

In 2022, land cruiser is available with a V8 petrol engine in the United States, among other markets, and with a diesel V8 in countries like Australia. All indications point to both eight cylinders, which leave along with the model of the current generation. Japanese magazine Best Car has learned Toyota will claim to be a replacement for the displacement by making the Land Cruiser available with a twin-turbocharged V6 engine borrowed from lexus.

The 3.4-liter six makes 416 horsepower and a powerful 442 pound-feet of torque when bolted into a Lexus LS. Buyers will also be able to order a hybrid powertrain built around the aforementioned V6 (and oddly not around the 3.5 litre six-car located in the LS 500h), and the V6 turbodiesel will be offered in some markets – certainly not ours. Each drivetrain will have all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission.

Called the 300-series internally, the next-generation Land Cruiser will reportedly be slightly shorter than the current, 200-series model (pictured), but it will be just as wide. Its height will vary slightly from market to market. It will be heavier, especially if it is equipped with a hybrid powertrain, but will at least match the robust 8,100-pound towing capacity of the 2022 model. It goes without saying that 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser will build an off-road ladder frame.

While the Japanese firm declined to comment on what was in store for the model, management stressed that it would not lose any of its off-road capacity. “Whatever we bring out, it will be able to, and I think our loyal owner will be very pleased,” sean hanley, vice president of sales and marketing for Toyota’s Australian division, said in an interview with CarSales. Australia is the second largest land cruiser market; the Middle East is the largest. Toyota can’t grind out a Land Cruiser if it wants to keep its target audience at the crease.

Toyota is expected to introduce the next-generation Land Cruiser in July or August 2022, about 62 years after it sold the very first example in the United States, but the off-roader may not come in U.S. showrooms until 2022 model year. More information will appear in the weeks before its official unveiling. The Lexus LX, which has always been a luxury Land Cruiser, will adopt new foundations and a reduced powertrain in 2022.

Last year, Toyota Motor North America CEO Jim Lentz said the company was “taking a hard look at all the segments that we compete in to make sure that we compete in profitable segments and that the products we sell have strategic value.”

The results of the review remain unclear, but it was widely believed that Toyota plans to remove a number of slow-selling models. Fast forward to today and it seems the land cruiser could live on borrowed time – in America at least.

Nothing is official, but Jonny Lieberman of Motor Trend took to Instagram to post that the Land Cruiser will be cancelled in the United States after the 2022 model year. Jalopnik turned to Toyota to comment, and was told that “Land Cruiser is a global icon that embodies Toyota’s reputation for reliability, durability and capabilities. While we cannot comment on a future product, we can confirm that no decision has been made to stop the sale of Land Cruiser in the US at this time.

The statement seems to suggest that the Land Cruiser won’t be disappearing any time soon, but it seems to be leaving the future open. Regardless, it’s not hard to see why Toyota might be considering dropping a luxury off-roader.

Carsalesbase data show Toyota sold 3,235 units in the United States last year and only moved 1,877 by July 2019. Modest sales are not too surprising as the Land Cruiser starts at $85,165, which is almost $35,000 more expensive than Sequoia.

The Lexus LX 570, which starts at $86,380, complicates the situation even more. While it’s similar to the Land Cruiser, Lexus managed to sell 4,753 LXs in the United States last year.

Given the overlap between the two models, it seems that the most successful will survive. In this case, it’s the Lexus LX, as Lieberman says the revamped 2023 model will be offered in America, even if the Land Cruiser won’t.
